SmartCert and Resilinc Partner to Eliminate Documentation Gaps and Prevent Incidents Like Missing Boeing Door Plug
Gilbert, Arizona – 3/11/2024 – SmartCert, the only network built to document parts throughout their lifecycle with enhanced visibility, traceability, and security, and Resilinc, a leading supply chain mapping, disruption sensing, and resiliency analytics company, have formed a strategic partnership to help aerospace supply chains eliminate documentation gaps and prevent incidents like the recent missing door plug on a Boeing 737 Max 9 airplane.
As reported by NPR over the weekend, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating a serious incident involving a missing door plug on a Boeing aircraft. Investigators believe that four key bolts were missing from the door plug, which caused it to blow off during a flight. Boeing has reportedly stated they are unable to locate documents related to the door plug.
The FAA has given Boeing 90 days to provide a plan of action to address its quality control problems.
“This incident highlights the critical importance of robust document management for parts and processes and the necessity of supply chain traceability,” said Lyndon Lattie, CEO of SmartCert. “SmartCert ensures all documents are properly managed and easily accessible in critical supply chains like aerospace. Adding SmartCert’s lot traceability to Resilinc’s robust, data-driven supply chain intelligence delivers the best-in-class solution the industry requires to avoid missing documentation, grounded aircraft, and thousands of man hours chasing paperwork.”
“The horizontally integrated, global supply networks that are relied upon in aerospace truly require diligent supply chain tracing and supplier mapping. Both should be a high priority for aerospace firms,” said Peter Guinto, President of Government, Defense, and Aerospace for Resilinc.
The AOG Technics Scandal: A Cautionary Tale
The Boeing incident is not an isolated case of paperwork challenges. In 2023, the aviation industry was rocked by the AOG Technics scandal, where a UK-based company supplied counterfeit aircraft parts to major airlines. These parts lacked proper certification and documentation, raising concerns about safety and regulatory compliance. The scandal exposed vulnerabilities in the supply chain and highlighted the need for stricter controls on parts procurement and documentation management.
SmartCert launched in 2021 to connect suppliers and customers and streamline and simplify the exchange of required documentation. The network offers organizations a powerful solution to:
- Centralize document management: SmartCert’s cloud-based document management system provides a secure, centralized, and searchable repository for all critical documents, including engineering drawings, manufacturing procedures, vendor audits, and service and quality control records.
- Automate document workflows: SmartCert automates document workflows, eliminating document silos and ensuring that documents are reviewed, approved, and distributed to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Expand vendor traceability: The network provides real-time visibility into the entire supply chain, from raw materials to finished products. This allows organizations to identify and mitigate potential risks associated with part recalls, failures, and missing or incomplete documentation.
“Our partnership with SmartCert will help organizations close the loop on document management and supply chain traceability down to the part level,” said Guinto. “Through our combined expertise, we can help organizations prevent incidents like the missing Boeing door plug and ensure the safety and compliance of their products coming from vendors at any tier in the supply network.”
